Newsletter - January 2016

Good evening Whitney High PTSA members,

We hope you had a wonderful holiday season, and start year 2016 re-energized. Please tune to Whitney High PTSA updates:

- Come Monday, January 11 at 6:30pm for Partnering for Student Success workshop (in Whitney MPR). Four students notably successful in finding their Elements will share the stories. Learn from their experiences what students can do to very naturally get on the top of admission lists for colleges of choice. Listen, ask questions, and gain ideas relevant for your situation.

- Foundation Annual Fundraising Party is approaching. The Great Gatsby Gala is on Friday February 26, 2016 at the Sheraton Cerritos, 7pm to 11pm. Tickets are $70 donation per person - check with PTSA or any other parent group to get yours. Dance, play at casino, take part in silent auctions, take a snapshot from the photo booth, win costume contest and try a raffle. See more in the flyer at http://whitneyhighptsa.org/resources/GreatGatsby2016.pdf.

- PTSA scholarship details are being finalized. We plan to publish this year’s rules by the end of January, and invite students to participate through an email broadcast, our web site and College&Career Center. In meanwhile, please consider two scholarships ($750 and $500) by the state PTA with application open for PTA members through January 22: capta.org/programs-events/scholarships/graduating-high-school-seniors/.

- ABC Annual Parent Leadership Conference is on Saturday, March 19, at Sheraton Cerritos. Whitney High will get ten seats, and PTSA will cover attendance fees. It’s a great chance to meet other highly motivated parents; celebrate achievements and get updates on what’s going on in ABC district; and dive into topics most interesting for you in focused seminars (check photos from last year’s PLC here: https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B-H2IWvLs4tcU1NyZXNmWjZYZ0k&usp=sharing&tid=0B-H2IWvLs4tcWVJqUno4OVBxTDQ). Last year we had much more demand than we had seats available, so we ran a drawing to allocate admissions. Let us know no later than January 31 by responding to this email if you’d like to get a seat in this year’s Parent Leadership Conference.

- We are seeking to add new Whitney PTSA members to next year’s PTSA Board. Elections will be in April; please consider yourself (or other PTSA members) for an active, prominent position in Whitney community. Note that highly involved parents tend to have much more successful students. It’s not a coincidence that all members of the current PTSA board have fantastic stories to share about their sons and daughters. If you’d like to discuss your ideas and check how your skills can match the needs of next year’s PTSA Board, contact PTSA President Mike Fedorov at mikefedorov@whitneyhighptsa.org.

Newsletter - October 2015

Good evening Whitney High PTSA members,

- Join us for Tea with Our Principal on Monday October 12th at 6:30pm in Whitney MPR. Both our current principal Mr. Glonchak and our former principal Dr. Buss plan to share their thoughts with you. If you are interested to hear from the source about the transition, ask questions and get answers right away in an informal, friendly atmosphere
- RSVP using this link: https://www.whitneyhighptsa.org/manage/rsvp.php?c=hE91a3Fs&id=5040 or send a message to rsvp@whitneyhighptsa.org.

- Consider participating in this year`s Reflections program - submit your work by 11/2/15 deadline. Get school, district, state or national recognition to add to your portfolio! This year`s theme is “Let Your Imagination Fly”.

- Join Latino Parents Association for Viejas Casino Turnaround Fundraiser on Saturday October 24 - see the flyer at whitneyhighptsa.org/resources/20151024LPA.pdf.

- We have a fantastic year with students demonstrating excellence in tests and families showing active support by joining parent groups. This is exactly how we can best help our students realize their full potential. We noticed that even with Whitney`s amazing average level, parents actively involved in Whitney community see their students achieve well above “Whitney standard”. So make this trend work for you, and grab your seat on Whitney PTSA Board, or join the Foundation, or take a leading role in other parents` groups. We still have vacancies on PTSA board and in the Foundation.

Newsletter - June 2014

Dear Whitney High PTSA Members,

We can`t wait for the end of the school year and fast-approaching summer break. It`s lots of rest and fun for our students. For those who don`t want to completely forget about studying, we have Whitney Summer Academy with new, broader selection of classes and arts/fitness activities. The enrollment ends this week - don`t miss it. There are a few spots left in the Performing Arts Camp by Jodi Improta. More sessions are open for high-enrollment classes like Critical Writing and Reading, Algebra and Geometry, so spots are available there again, too - with the target for the teacher to student ratio remaining below 20. With well-known Whitney teachers and course prices way better than for comparable classes in university camps, that`s a great option to stay sharp over summer. Importantly, all earnings from Summer Academy go back to Whitney High. Review the courses and enroll at http://whitneyhighfoundation.org/sa .

We have just completed two events, 8th Grade Celebration and Senior Award Night. Thanks to all volunteers who helped set it up, make the events happen and clean up after. Please visit our Facebook page for some exciting photos at http://www.facebook.com/groups/whptsa . Consider volunteering for future events at http://www.whitneyhighptsa.org/volunteer.php .

Senior Luncheon is upcoming - it`s Wednesday June 18 at 11am (volunteers will start setting up at 9:30am).

And of course we are looking forward to seeing you next school year. Have a great summer, and we`ll be in touch with the next Whitney High PTSA newsletter in September!

This seminar`s focus will be on finding opportunities. You will learn from the experts about internships, volunteering and other activities outside of the school curriculum that can sharpen students` ability to get to the colleges of choice. With refreshments served, you will also have time to connect with other PTSA members. If you`re interested, you`ll be able to stay for PTSA board meeting as well.

In case you missed last Monday`s special meeting where Dr. Buss discussed coping and stress management skills, we have recorded it and uploaded to Whitney High PTSA web site in the Activities section.

Newsletter - January 2014

Dear Whitney PTSA members,

With all of your support, we enjoyed a successful year 2013. We made membership dues easier through online registration and payment. Together, we helped Whitney community completing multiple fundraisers and activities, including McTeachers nights, Stacked gift cards, Tea with Principal, Staff Appreciation Luncheon and School Cents. First time this year, we signed up on Shoparoo and accumulated close to 40,000 points that will bring more funds to help Whitney High.

As Whitney High PTSA team, we thank you for your continued support to make 2014 even more successful - and suggest how we can help our students even better in year 2014:

1. Take full advantage of PTSA web site and Facebook page. Sign fellow Whitney parents and students up for membership in the Facebook group and recommend them renewing PTSA membership, if not done yet. Unfortunately, a number of last year's members didn't renew their PTSA membership this year. Let us get them renew their membership. More members will result in more exciting and fun activities, larger funds raised, and in turn greater value to the whole Whitney High community. This will also make a stronger, more vibrant online community, helping keep all members informed and engaged.

2. Employer matching Contributions.
Please check with your employer for matching contributions and volunteer incentive programs. Make use of these opportunities to help Whitney PTSA. Here is one example how your employer may match your contribution: one of Whitney PTSA members, Murali Vasudevan, had spent hundreds of hours last year to build the online features of our website. His employer, Sempra Energy, has donated $500 in 2013 in recognition of his volunteer effort - see how it worked at Sempra Energy

3. Senior Scholarship application will be coming soon and we have only 12 paid members with senior students. We strongly encourage all senior parents to renew or enroll in Whitney High PTSA, and then ask their senior child to participate in the essay competition.

4. Join us for upcoming Partnering for Student Success workshops. Next 2 workshops are on 2/3/14 and 4/14/14. The topics will be "Finding Opportunities for Internships and Volunteering" and "Helping Your Student Develop Skills for Studying, Organization and Stress Management".

5. Take part in e-Waste recycling sponsored by WIPA and carried out in Whitney High parking lot on 1/25 and 1/26 - see more in the flyer at https://www.whitneyhighptsa.org/images/WIPA_ewaste_flyer_2014.jpg

6. Mark the calendar for Whitney High Masquerade Ball 2014 that will be on Friday, March 7 in Sheraton Cerritos 7pm to 11pm. All Whitney High parent groups are joining forces to prepare an evening full of fun, joy and Whitney High spirit.

Have a healthy, successful and prosperous new year!

Yours,
Whitney High PTSA team
